Kerala CPM calls for resignation of Governor Arif Mohammad Khan

Thiruvanthapuram: The ruling CPM in Kerala on Friday said that it would be good for the state if Governor Arif Mohammad Khan resigned from the post.

At a press conference here, CPM state secretary M V Govindan said the Governor had acted in an anti-democratic manner to scuttle the bills passed by Kerala legislative assembly. Khan was forced to act on the bills after the Supreme Court criticised his action of holding back the bills. The apex court had categorically asked him as to why he blocked the bills for two years.

When asked whether the governor should step down for acting against the interests of the state, the CPM state secretary said.''He should resign immediately. It would be good for the state if he relinquishes the post at the earliest,” he added.

It may be recalled that the apex court had asked the Kerala governor's additional chief secretary to refer to its recent verdict in the Punjab case, where it had held that governors cannot; ''thwart the normal course of law-making."

The court, while deciding on the Punjab government's plea against governor Banwarilal Purohit, had held that governors cannot take the liberty to keep bills pending indefinitely without any action.
