AIADMK influencing delimitation of wards: Ma Subramanian
Chennai: With the Chennai Corporation expediting the delimitation of wards and preparing itself for ‘forthcoming’ local body elections, former Chennai Mayor and DMK MLA Ma. Subramanian alleged that civic officials are obliged to AIADMK while re-classifying the divisions.
Subramanian, Saidapet constituency MLA, on Wednesday, met Chennai Corporation Commissioner D. Karthikeyan at the latter’s office and handed over a representation urging impartial delimitation process.
“When DMK was in power, the outlying local bodies are appended with Chennai Corporation and total divisions were increased from 155 to 200. But AIADMK government is trying to decrease the number of divisions to 134,” Subramanian told media persons.
“Chennai Corporation officials are doing delimitation in a way that every division shall have at least 33,000 voters. Division 159, the only ward located in Pallavaram Assembly constituency has merely 4,000 voters. By going through the current process, the ward might be merged with one of the divisions in Alandur constituency. How can a division be located in two different constituencies?” Subramanian said.
Subramanian also alleged that officials are conducting the delimitation drive on the the direction of AIADMK men. “AIADMK is forcing officials to re-classify the division to ensure their victory in local body elections,” he alleged.
