BJP corporators seek CBI probe into GHMC corruption
Hyderabad: While the BJP corporators said they would submit a representation to Governor Dr.Tamilsai Soundarajan seeking a CBI investigation into alleged corruption in the GHMC, the Congress party corporators stated they would take up the issue in Parliament.
Minutes after GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalaxmi adjourned the council meeting on Wednesday, the BJP and Congress corporators alleged that the GHMC zonal extra commissioners engaged in corrupt activities by collecting 'mamools' while discharging their duties. Further, they alleged that the GHMC authorities stopped providing funds for development work in their respective wards because they raised their voices of dissent.
BJP corporator from Monda Market Konatham Deepika, who was holding a bottle filled with contaminated water, claimed that she took the sample of contaminated drinking water from her ward to demonstrate the real situation that existed in the locality. Residents suffer as a result of a lack of clean drinking water in several areas of the Monda Market area, she alleged. "When the council meeting started, the Mayor read her speech and immediately adjourned the meeting within minutes. The GHMC officials miserably failed to address the civic issues in the city," Deepika alleged.
Congress party Lingojiguda Corporator, Darpally Raja Sekhar Reddy, accused the GHMC officials for failing to address people's concerns. Officials from the GHMC engaged in corrupt practices, and the officials withheld funds when the opposition party corporators’ questioned, he accused. A girl Mounika died falling into a manhole due to heavy rains in the city. Even as children and elderly people face tough times with stray dogs, the GHMC officials failed to notice such issues in the city," she added.
Ameerpet BJP corporator Ketineni Sarala stated that stray dogs and mosquitoes are major issues in the city that must be addressed by GHMC officials. She cited the death of 12-year-old girl Mounika, who fell into a manhole filled with rain water. “The elderly and children dread to step out of their houses due to the stray dog menace and the GHMC failed to address these issues,” she noted.
Box: 40 corporators arrested
As many as 40 BJP and Congress party corporators, who have been staging a protest at the council hall, were taken arrested by the police and shifted to their respective residences on Wednesday. When they were staging a silent protest inside GHMC council hall, the police entered the hall and took them into custody. The corporators stated that they staged a protest inside the council hall alleging that the GHMC officials and Mayor deliberately adjourned the council meeting. The BJP corporators claimed that they have attended the council meeting hoping that the Mayor will hold debate on civic issues
