Telangana: Congress and BJP demand Metro for Old City
Hyderabad: Congress Legislature Party leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and BJP floor leader Raja Singh on Monday demanded the state government to explain why the Metro Rail project was being delayed in Old City.
Participating in a debate, Bhatti said “The Congress government brought Hyderabad Metro Rail project, which connects Old City till Falaknuma in the first phase. However, Old City has not been connected till date. Who is obstructing the Metro in Old City? For whose benefit did the government halt the project in the Old City? The government should come out with all the facts."
Stating that the Congress government had extended four per cent reservations to Muslims in education and employment due to which lakhs of Muslims had secured seats in higher education courses and jobs in government and private sectors, he said the TRS government promised to increase reservations to 12 per cent but has done nothing on that front in the last seven years.
Raja Singh said people in Old City were facing severe hardships due to lack of Metro Rail connectivity.
"Many people from Old City travel every day for their livelihood. They are facing severe transportation problems. Why should they be deprived of Metro connectivity,” he asked.
In his reply, MA&UD minister K.T. Rama Rao said that the government was ready to extend Metro Rail to Old City and would accomplish it within the next two years.
“L&T was supposed to begin work last year itself but the company faced financial losses because of Covid-19 and hence had to stop the works. The Chief Minister has recently constituted a committee to suggest measures on how to take the Metro project forward," he said.
