DMK's rising leader Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi strikes a chord with voters
TIRUCHY: Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, DMK’s rising politician from the third generation and a close friend of DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi is making his electoral debut from the industrial town of Tiruverumbur here and seems to be striking a chord with young as well as old voters.
Tiruverumbur has become one of the prestigious seats for the DMK after Stalin’s emotional appeal in the constituency to vote for Mahesh. The DMK treasurer, who campaigned in Tiruverumbur, said “Mahesh affectionately calls me as Periappa. I also consider him as my son. So, I am seeking votes for my son”, an emotionally charged Stalin said and shared the memories of his friend and former MLA Poyyamozhi, who died at a young age.
With friend Udhananidhi, who is busy in film making, not making up his mind about politics, Mahesh, one of the brains behind the DMK’s new style ‘Namakku Naamey’ campaign is the first politician of the 67-year-old Dravidian party’s third generation to take up active politics.
His grand-father, Anbil Dharmalingam, a close associate of DMK chief M. Karunanidhi was known to be one of the architects of the DMK in Tiruchy district. Karunanidhi, who campaigned in Tiruchy, last month, emotionally recalled his association with Dharmalingam and introduced Mahesh to the old timers.
After emotional appeals of both Karunanidhi and Stalin, DMK cadres of all generations are working vigorously working for a victory of Mahesh, who mingles with cadre and people very easily, without showing signs of coming from an affluent family. In every nook and corner, a member of DMK youth wing or functionaries of Udhayanidhi’s fan club is in election work.
AIADMK candidate Kalaiselvan, a basket ball and kabadi player is a well known face in Tiruverumbur. With factories like BHEL, situated in the area, workers and trade unions play a key role here. Kalaiselvan, a BHEL employee is the secretary of the Anna Trade Union in the district. The AIADMK, which used to allocate Tiruverumbur to its allies is contesting here after two decades.
Sitting MLA Senthilnathan of DMDK is contesting again with the support of Left parties and MDMK, who have support in the area. DMDK splitting the votes of workers could be a disadvantage for the AIADMK.
