WARANGAL: Leaders of opposition parties, along with Kakatiya University Students Joint Action Committee (JAC), have condemned police action against student leaders of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) during the dharna in the premises of Kakatiya University in Hanamkonda on Tuesday.
ABVP leaders had staged a dharna in front of the VC’s chambers demanding an inquiry into the irregularities in PhD admissions. When police personnel tried to foil their dharna, a clash ensued in which furniture and computer in the office were damaged.
Following this, police took some students into their custody and shifted them to KU police station. They also registering a case against them for damaging furniture. The arrested students were produced before the court on Thursday.
The students informed the court that police had tortured them and showed their wounds. On court’s orders, they were taken to the MGM Hospital for treatment. The students were then handed over to the Subedari police station.
Following this, KU students JAC staged a dharna at the university premises. Extending support to the dharna, Hanamkonda DCC president N. Rajendar Reddy, BJP official spokesperson A. Rakesh Reddy and BJP leader Ganta Ravi Kumar accused university vice chancellor Prof. T. Ramesh of acting like a BRS activist.
Meanwhile, speaking to media, police commissioner A.V. Ranganath condemned allegations that police officials had tortured the students using third degree methods. He maintained that the students had shown their old injuries and tried to misguide the court. “Police is not going to spare those who take law into their hands,” Ranganath stated.
