Hyderabad: BJP state president, MP Bandi Sanjay said that Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao had ignored the family members of 360 weavers, who had committed suicide in the last eight years. Instead, Rao extended financial support to Punjab farmers, who had lost their lives during farm laws protests, he said.
Sanjay was addressing a public meeting at Bhoodan Pochampally in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district as part of the third phase of Praja Sangrama Yatra on Sunday.
A meeting was organised to mark the National Handlooms Day. The BJP leader garlanded the statues of Acharya Vinoba Bhave and Vedere Ramchandra Reddy in the town.
Sanjay said that the lives of 360 weavers could have been saved had Rao implemented the assurances he gave to handloom workers. He said that when BJP comes to power in the state, they will construct pucca houses for weavers and handlooms would be purchased by government agencies on par with paddy procurement.
Sanjay demanded elections should be conducted for handloom cooperative societies in the state. He called upon the weavers’ community to teach a fitting lesson to Rao for ignoring poll promises like `15,000 minimum wage for weavers and subsidy on spinning rolls.
He said the TRS rule was marked by suicides by farmers, RTC workers and Intermediate students.
Sanjay said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had encouraged exports of handloom products, which had fetched a revenue of around `8,000 crore.
Meanwhile, Sanjay’s childhood friends met him during the padayatra and they recalled their childhood memories.
