Kamal Nath CM face of Congress in MP: Surjewala

Bhopal: AICC general secretary in-charge of Madhya Pradesh affairs Randeep Surjewala on Sunday said that state Congress president Kamal Nath would be the chief ministerial (CM) face of the party in the forthcoming assembly polls in MP.

Mr Surjewala said that the leader who heads the party in a state was projected as CM candidate of Congress in the polls.

“The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president of a state is a natural CM face of the party in the polls in that state”, he told reporters here.

Interestingly, Mr Surjewala had earlier indicated that Mr Nath might not contest in the year-end assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh since the party did not want him to get diverted from poll management by fielding him in the polls.

But, Mr Nath would be the party’s CM face, he had said recently.

Mr Nath had also earlier said that the party would take a call if he would contest in the ensuing assembly polls.

Mr Surjewala also hinted that Congress would make caste census a key poll promise in the upcoming assembly polls in the state.

The party would conduct a caste census in Madhya Pradesh if it returns to power in the upcoming elections in the state, he said.

Meanwhile, the Central Election Committee (CEC) of Congress which met at Delhi for the second day on Sunday to hold discussion on the prospective candidates of the party for the forthcoming assembly elections in MP.

Mr Nath who also attended the meeting said that the release of the first list of candidates may take another six to seven days.

He said that he fully supported the demand by the party leaders to conduct a caste survey in the country.
