Madurai: DMK working president M.K. Stalin on Wednesday dispelled all media speculation on DMK-BJP alliance in the aftermath of Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling on DMK chief M. Karunanidhi at his residence in Gopalapuram.
“We will never use the meeting between Modi and Karunanidhi for any political purpose,” said Stalin while addressing the huge gathering in anti-demonetisation protest organised by DMK in Madurai.
“Ever after I clarified to the media, that it was a just a courtesy call, some newspapers and news channels were trying to create political confusion using the meeting, but they will never succeed in it,” said Stalin.
He asserted DMK closeness with Congress and said decisions have been taken jointly to stage protests in every state against the BJP government’s demonetisation move during its first anniversary on November 8 as Karuppu Dhinam (Black Day).
Stalin, who turned up for the protest wearing a black shirt, warned the Modi government for implementing anti-people, including GST and said they are answerable for this.
“We will not fear for any threats and will continue to fight for safeguarding the welfare of common people,” he said.
Stating that the DMK has been working for the welfare of common people for the last 68 years, even whether it was not in power or not, Stalin recalled the sacrifices made by party chief Karunanidhi to safeguard democracy during the Emergency period. “Karunanidhi, who was then the Chief Minister, opposed it tooth and nail even after knowing very it will result in losing the power,”
Coming back to demonetisation move, Stalin said that people from all walks of life more particularly small and medium traders and labourers were affected by this policy. The Modi government turned a deaf ear when Opposition parties raised voice against it, but today BJP former finance minister Yashwant Sinha and its MP Subramanian Swamy and the former Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan also express concern on note ban, he said. “We got our freedom at midnight, by we lost it by Modi’s note demonetisation announcement at midnight,” he said.
Even in the case of GST, only after allied parties of NDA have raised their voices, PM Narendra Modi during the recent election campaign in Gujarat informed the people to modify it.
Members of other like-minded political parties such as Congress, VCK, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi and Indian Union Muslim league and senior DMK leaders in the Madurai region participated in the protest.
