Do more research in developing dryland agriculture: Siddaramaiah
Dharwad: Emphasizing the crucial role of agricultural universities, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called for intensified research in developing dryland agriculture.
He made these remarks while inaugurating Krishi Mela-2023, held at the Dharwad Agricultural University campus on Saturday.
Expressing special concern for dryland farmers, the Chief Minister called for research into enhanced varieties tailored for dry farming.
The Chief Minister also suggested that in cases where a major crop suffers damage, scientists should promptly explore alternatives.
Highlighting the dependence of 60 percent of the population on agriculture and acknowledging its significance as the nation's primary occupation, Siddaramaiah lamented the trend of people moving away from this sector.
He stressed that the research and technologies generated by universities must directly benefit farmers on the ground.
Siddaramaiah reassured the public that all developmental initiatives will proceed in tandem with the implementation of the five guarantee schemes in the state.
"There is no financial impediment for the government. This year, approximately Rs 32,000 crore is allocated for the implementation of the five guarantees. From the next fiscal year onwards, an estimated Rs 56,000 crore will be earmarked annually for the same. The government is fully equipped to allocate these necessary funds," he said.
Siddaramaiah projected that, encompassing the costs of the five guarantees, the budget for the next fiscal year is anticipated to hover around Rs 380 lakh crore.
