BJP committed to UCC, MIM and BRS views don't matter: Chintala

HYDERABAD: The BJP has dismissed opposition to the Uniform Civil Code by the BRS party and its ally, the AIMIM, declaring that the Bharatiya Janata Party is committed to introducing and implementing the Uniform Civil Code.

Answering questions on AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi seeking support of the BRS party and Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao in opposing the UCC, senior BJP leader and former Khairatabad MLA Chintala Ramachandra Reddy said “the BJP is committed to UCC since the inception of Bharatiya Jana Sangh in the 1950s and its metamorphosis later as the BJP. In every BJP manifesto, our party has committed itself to UCC and it will be implemented.”

Ramachandra Reddy also demanded that Municipal Administration & Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao explain why despite his claims of more than Rs 1 lakh crore spent on Hyderabad in the last nine years, 20 lakh families in the city still do not get piped drinking water, and why even a small rain results in floods in Hyderabad.

None of the promises BRS made before the GHMC elections in 2020 have been kept. The promised sewage treatment plants have not been built and only 772.3 million litres a day (MLD) of sewage is treated when the city generates 2,650 MLD of waste water. With no work on storm water drains, the city turns into a cess pool after every rain with overflowing sewage adding to the rain water, he said.

“Despite a 80 lakh population in GHMC area, the civic body has only a Rs 6,150 crore budget. Pune with 60 lakh population has a budget of Rs 8,592 crore, and Ahmedabad with 55 lakh population has a Rs 9,842 crore budge, he said, adding that the BJP, once it comes to power, will ensure rapid addressing of the civic problems the city faces.
