KCR meets Owaisi, opposes UCC

Hyderabad: After meeting a delegation of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, as well as religious organisations led by MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao on Monday announced that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) will oppose the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill proposed by the BJP-led government at the Centre. The Bill is likely to be tabled during the monsoon session of the Parliament, starting July 20.

The Chief Minister said the BRS would fight the UCC Bill by uniting like-minded political parties, on the issue. He also directed BRS parliamentary leaders K. Keshava Rao and Nama Nageshwar Rao to prepare an action plan for the upcoming session.

All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) president Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, AIMIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi, ministers Mahmood Ali and K.T. Rama Rao, and board executive members of religious bodies took part in the meeting.

In the media statement, the Chief Minister said that the BJP-led Central government, which ignored the development and created enmity between people, is conspiring to divide people of the country again under the guise of the UCC Bill.

“India is blessed with multiple cultures, traditions, castes and religions and stood as a role model in advocating unity in diversity to the world,” Rao was quoted as saying.

The Chief Minister also stated that tribals, with their unique cultures, people of different castes and religious people, including Hindus of the country, are confused and worried about the UCC Bill.

The release quoted Rao as saying, “It is clear that the imposition of UCC is a malicious attempt by the Union government. The BJP government has been ignoring development of the country… plotted to instigate people by promoting divisive politics by raking up clashes between communities to derive political benefits through the UCC Bill.”

The AIMPLB thanked Rao for promising to oppose the Bill, supporting their endeavour to safeguard the ‘Ganga Jamuni Tehzeeb’ and protect the customs of all sections of society, irrespective of religion and region.

Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting, Asaduddin Owaisi said that the UCC was not just a Muslim issue “but also a Christian issue, Hindu issue and tribal issue”, claiming its implementation would destroy the beauty and culture of the nation.
