7 corporators join Congress in Vijayapura
Vijayapura: In a significant turn of events, seven corporators joined Congress party in the presence of District In-charge Minister MB Patil and his brother, MLC Sunilgouda Patil on Tuesday.
Among the seven, four were previously independent, while two hailed from AIMIM and one from JD(S). In the elections for the Vijayapura City Corporation held in 2022, BJP emerged as the largest party with 17 seats, while Congress secured 10, AIMIM 2, JD(S) 1, and Independents 5.
"This marked the first election after the body was upgraded from Municipality to City Corporation. The mayoral election was not held due to an ongoing reservation issue in the court. Today, seven have joined our ranks, adding to our existing independent members. The total count of Congress corporators now stands at 18. During the Mayoral election in the coming days, we are confident of electing our mayor," Vijayapura District Congress Committee Vice President Gangadhar Sambanni told Deccan Chronicle.
During the mayoral election, local legislators also exercise their vote. Of the 6 legislators, BJP holds one MLA and MP each, whereas Congress boasts of 2 MLAs and 2 MLCs.
"Out of a total of 41 votes, Congress commands 22. This puts us in a favorable position to elect our mayor in the coming days," he added.
Minister MB Patil returned from a two-week official tour of the United States and landed in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The political shift unfolded soon after his return.
"Everyone acknowledges that Congress alone possesses the capability to govern in alignment with the public's aspirations. Hence, independents and members from other parties have voluntarily embraced our cause," MB Patil said.
"I extend a warm welcome to all. We are confident that Vijayapura City will experience effective governance in the days ahead," he added.
Congress leaders are optimistic that this development will fortify the party's prospects in the forthcoming MP elections, presenting a testament to the progress achieved within the city limits.
