Caller tunes woo people in Kannur to cast votes
KANNUR: The election officials in Kannur is taking new ways to reach the public to encourage voting. If you ring the officials in Kannur, you will be welcomed by a song and a message urging voters to exercise their franchise. The unique caller tune is developed by the Kannur SVEEP (Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation) team as part of election awareness campaign by the district administration.
The song is composed and sung by Umesh Neeleshwaram, a music teacher.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Kannur district collector and district election officer P. Bala Kiran said the caller tune is intended to encourage voters to understand the importance of the election and also the efforts by the SVEEP team.
“This is a unique project by SVEEP team. We created it and gave it to BSNL which in turn activated the caller tune,” he said. Over 300 officials in the district have activated this election special caller tune in their official mobile number including the district collector, ADM, sector officers, etc.
The caller tune starts with the pledge ‘we will vote on May 16 to strengthen our democracy’ is followed by a song which urges people to convey the message of the importance of the ballot and reminds not to waste the opportunity. “It is indeed a great honour for me to participate in this project which is going to be a part of our election history,” said Mr Neeleshwaram. Kannur has 11 assembly constituencies, 19, 54, 840 voters and 1,629 polling booths.
