Vijayawada: Telugu Desam president and former chief minister Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday welcomed the 'historic order' of the Supreme Court, putting the 124A sedition law on hold.
Naidu hailed the Supreme Court for ordering the governments not to file new FIRs under this colonial-era law. In a tweet, the TD chief said the SC order came as a huge relief at a time when some governments were using the sedition law to target political rivals.
Naidu asserted that the court's decision would help in protecting and upholding the democratic rights of the people.
Naidu on Thursday described the non-payment of the CM convoy bills of Rs 17.5 crore as an indication of the prevailing financial crisis in the state.
Naidu termed as 'shameful' the rise in government dues to taxi drivers to Rs 17.5 crore over the past three years. The bills were not being paid even for the taxi cars hired for the convoys of the chief minister and other dignitaries, he said.
Naidu said the people's revolt against rulers in Sri Lanka should serve as a lesson to the YSRC government and the AP police. He warned of serious consequences if the YSRC government continued to “suppress” the people by “misusing” the police force. The Sri Lanka police and army tried to suppress the people there, but eventually the PM had to resign and run away, he noted.
TD chief said: "Sri Lanka rulers took huge loans and looted them. The island nation became bankrupt. When the police questioned, the army was used against them. Even then, the citizens started violent protests. Both army and police turned helpless there."
