Political violence: How Sri M launched his war for peace

Spiritual leader who pursued peace bid for months says leaders take genuine interest.

Kannur: Spiritual leader Sri M treaded a rare path when he decided to take up the mission to bring back peace to his native state. Reacting to the report published in DC on Tuesday on his role in bringing peace to Kannur, Sri M told this newspaper that he had communicated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and RSS leaders Mohan Bhagavat and Bhaiyyaji Joshi on the matter some time ago.

“I am overwhelmed by the support received by the peace initiatives we first started at the national level. I feel the rival parties’ leaders are genuine in this regard. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan offered to attend the first peace meeting even without security. The request I made to the Kerala leaders was to forget the past and work out ways to bring back peace to the land. After the initial hesitation, all of them agreed. It was the chief minister who first offered to talk on this issue here,” said the spiritual leader.

His birthday message to Narendra Modi in September included two requests - to intervene in the violence in Kerala, his homeland, and the second, on Kashmir. “The Prime Minister offered to support me and his last meeting with the Chief Minister proved to be a step in the right direction for the peace bid. A few months ago, I had meetings with Mohan Bhagavat in Vigyan Bhavan and Joshi in Kochi. They were looking forward to the peace initiatives,” he said and added that he was ready to associate with any peace bid on this regard in future too.

Sri M’s association with the Left leaders, with his student politics background, and later with the CPM yoga wing also helped him earn the trust of the ruling party in the state. He had recently written the introduction to the book being prepared by the yoga wing. A mass yoga was conducted by the CPM last year under his leadership.
