Karnataka BJP Mulls statewide protest against Belagavi incident
Belagavi: In response to the recent incident in Belagavi where a woman was disrobed and tied to a pole, the BJP has announced a statewide protest on Dec 16. A team, comprising four women MPs and a national secretary, will meet the victim to assess the situation.
Addressing the media, BY Vijayendra, BJP state unit president, expressed concern over the "deteriorating law and order situation in the state over the past few months."
"The state's law and order have crumbled in recent months. A woman was disrobed, paraded and tied to a pole, and it appears that the government has not treated this incident with due seriousness," Vijayendra stated.
He also referred to the High Court's observations on the incident.
"The incident has captured the nation's attention. This unsettling occurrence transpired in Belagavi during the ongoing legislative session. I personally visited the place and met with the victim. Nobody from the government other than the Home Minister visited. Even the CM did not. The government's response, citing the arrest of seven individuals, seems insufficient," he said.
Condemning the incident, Vijayendra announced a statewide protest scheduled for Dec 16, with active participation from women.
"We will conduct a widespread protest across the state tomorrow, spanning all district headquarters. It is imperative that the state government wakes up to the seriousness of the situation and takes measures to prevent such incidents in the future," he said.
"A delegation featuring four MPs – Aprajita Sarangi, Sunita Duggal, Ranjeeta Koli, Locket Chatterjee, and BJP national Secretary Asha Lakra will be in Belagavi tomorrow. They will meet the victim," he said.
Criticizing the current government, Vijayendra asserted, "Since assuming power, there has been a palpable lack of fear of the police. Criminal elements believe they can act with impunity and escape consequences freely."
