Congress to kick-start 100-day bypoll campaign from August 20

Manickam Tagore said the party had a target of reaching out to more than 30,000 people in the constituency

Hyderabad: The Congress on Wednesday announced a 100-day campaign for the Munugode bypoll from August 20. Marking the birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi, the party will be holding programmes in all 175 villages in the constituency on that day.

Briefing mediapersons after chairing a meeting with the newly-formed committee of 14-member coordinators at Gandhi Bhavan, AICC in-charge Manickam Tagore said the party had a target of reaching out to more than 30,000 people in the constituency. “The party is expecting the byelection along with Gujarat’s Assembly election likely to be held in December 2nd week. Keeping this in mind, we have come up with a 100-day programme,” he explained.

Responding to questions that some more senior leaders including A. Maheshwar Reddy and Marri Shashidhar Reddy were speaking against the state of affairs within the party on Wednesday, Tagore maintained that the party worked in an organised manner and he representing the AICC president Sonia Gandhi was trying to resolve the matters. “The party will take a call about the grievances,” he said.

Trying to emphasise that all was going well within the party, particularly with Bhongir MP and star campaigner Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, Tagore tried evade the question on TPCC president A. Revanth Reddy’s remark of ‘home-guards’ and said that the issue was now a ‘closed chapter’.

“Venkat Reddy is my colleague in Parliament and we enjoy biryani together. He will come to Munugode whenever he feels like. The Congress is not dependent on anyone. There are many capable leaders and the party believes in collective decision making,” he said.
