Raman Singh elected speaker of Chhattisgarh Assembly
Raipur: Senior BJP MLA and former chief minister Dr Raman Singh was on Tuesday unanimously elected as speaker of the Chhattisgarh Assembly.
Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai moved a proposal in the house for the election of Dr Singh as the speaker of the Assembly which was seconded by deputy chief minister Arun Sao.
Leader of Opposition Charan Das Mahant also moved a similar proposal in the house which was seconded by senior Congress leader and former chief minister Bhupesh Baghel.
Several other BJP MLAs and Congress legislators moved similar proposals in the house.
The seven-time MLA and one time-Lok Sabha member, Dr Singh was elected from Rajnandgaon Assembly constituency in the just concluded polls in Chhattisgarh.
He was first elected to the undivided Madhya Pradesh Assembly from Kawardha Assembly constituency in 1990 and retained the seat in 1995.
He was then elected to Lok Sabha in 1999 and became a minister in the Vajpayee cabinet.
Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000.
He was elected to Chhattisgarh Assembly from Dongargaon Assembly constituency in 2004.
He has been representing Rajnandgaon Assembly constituency in Chhattisgarh consecutively for four times since 2008.
The 71-year-old BJP leader has said that his responsibility will be to take everyone together in the Chhattisgarh Assembly.
The first session of the newly elected Assembly in Chhattisgarh began on Tuesday.
