Assembly polls: Pondicherry women create history
Puducherry: Four woman candidates have emerged victorious in the assembly election at Puducherry, creating a new history in the Union Territory. There were no women legislators for the past 15 years in the state and Puducherry has seen only seven women MLAs since 1963.
This time around, four women candidates — two from NR Congress and one each from Congress and DMK won this time. Defeating NR Congress heavyweight, tourism minister P. Rajavelu with a margin of 1,468 votes in Nettappakkam constituency, V. Vizeaveny of Congress tops the list of woman MLAs
In Thirubhavanai, B. Kobiga of AINRC emerged victorious against the sitting NR Congress MLA P. Anagalane, who joined Congress on the eve of election. Another NR Congress candidate Chandirapriyanaga, retained the Nedungad seat which was represented by her father, agriculture minister V. Chadrakasu, who is not contesting in the election due to health problems.
It is moment of sweet revenge for DMK camp and candidate A. Geetha, who won against V.M.C. Sivakumar of AIADMK in Neravy T.R. Pattinam constituency of Karaikkal enclave.
