Monsoon session of Tamil Nadu Assembly in Oct
CHENNAI: The State Assembly is likely to meet in October for a brief monsoon session, which might see the House taking up discussion on a few Commission reports, including the Justice (Retired) Arumugasamy findings on the circumstances that led to the death of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalaithaa.
Though the dates for the session are yet to be finalized, the Government is prepared to place before the Assembly the reports by Justice (Retired) K. Chandru Commission on banning online gambling, the one by Justice Aruna Jagadeesan (Retired) Commission on the police firing at anti-Sterlite protestors in Thoothukudi in May 2018 and the Arumugasamy commission.
Taking up the reports for discussion in the Assembly could turn the session into a stormy one as both the firing at Thoothukudi and the passing away of Jayalalithaa took place during the tenure of former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
Since it is believed that the commissions of enquiry might have censured some AIADMK leaders who had held positions in the previous government, the opposition benches could object to some issues on the floor of the House.
Even the report on banning online gambling could be bone of contention in the Assembly since the AIADMK had already passed a bill banning it, which was revoked by a court order. So it needs to be seen if the recommendations of the Justice (Retired) Chandru commission would stand legal scrutiny.
Sources said that the session might not extend beyond five days but would discuss serious business of public concern and hence draw public attention to the proceedings.
