Nagaland trust vote: CM TR Zeliang proves majority with 47 MLAs' support

The chief minister received support from 36 NPF and four BJP legislators and seven Independents.

Guwahati/Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang on Friday won the trust vote with the support from 47 of the 58 MLAs, 36 NPF and four BJP legislators and seven Independents.

Zeliang was sworn in as Nagaland’s 19th chief minister on Wednesday, hours after Governor PB Acharya dismissed Shurhozelie Liezietsu as the chief minister after he failed to prove his majority in the Assembly.

The governor had on July 11 and July 13 told Liezietsu to seek a vote of confidence on or before July 15. Liezietsu, a non-elected member to the 60-member House, had the support of 10 NPF legislators and an Independent member.

Zeliang, who was sworn in as the chief minister of Nagaland in 2014, had to resign from the post in February this year after party legislators withdrew their support to break the stalemate between groups of tribals and the state government. The tribal groups were agitating against Zeliang’s move to hold civic polls with 33 per cent reservation for women.
