Opposition parties search for women candidates

NIZAMABAD: The opposition Congress and BJP parties are trying to field more women candidates for the coming assembly elections in the undivided Nizamabad district.

The ruling BRS has already declared male candidates for all nine constituencies. Hints are that the BJP and Congress would choose women candidates for Jukkal, Yellareddy and Armoor assembly constituencies.

In Jukkal, the BRS confirmed the re-fielding of sitting MLA Hanumanth Shinde. BJP’s Kamareddy district president, former MLA Aruna Tara, is seeking the party’s MLA ticket. The BJP high command conducted surveys in assembly constituencies to assess the strength of the party as well as of the aspirants.

In the Yellareddy constituency, sitting MLA Jajala Surender is named as the BRS nominee. However, the BJP high command is verifying the candidature of advocate Rachana Reddy for Yellareddy. Rachana is a native of Nagireddypet mandal headquarters and has been in the BJP in recent months. Associates of Rachana said she wants to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Zaheerabad. She is also ready to contest from the Yellareddy assembly constituency.

Roads minister Prashanth Reddy’s sister Vemula Radhika wants to contest as a Congress candidate from the Armoor assembly constituency. TPCC leadership is in consultation with Radhika, an official with the state government.

In Balkonda assembly constituency, former MLA A Annapurnamma is pushing to field her son Mallikarjun Reddy as the BJP candidate. Some party followers instead favour Annapurnamma as the candidate. But, she says “youths must come forward.”

However, BJP and Congress parties are conducting a series of surveys ahead of the assembly elections. Undivided Nizamabad district has the highest women population. Second-rung women leaders are eagerly waiting for elevation as MLAs.

Presently, elected women representatives are working as mayor, municipal chairpersons, MPP presidents and ZPTC members.
