TPCC picks 70 candidates for ensuing polls, remaining names likely today
HYDERABAD: The Congress screening committee, after an elaborate exercise in Delhi, is understood to have finalised 60 per cent of candidates with high winning potential in the ensuing Assembly elections.
During a five-hour discussion on Friday, the leaders verified details of candidates, their caste equations, financial status, sources of income, and participation in party activities, among others.
In the two days of meetings, the party reportedly verified every application thoroughly, especially those based on survey reports.
The names cleared by the committee will have to be approved by the AICC. It is reported that the Congress has focussed on BC, SC, and ST aspirants and their standing in their respective constituencies.
"The names of around 70 candidates have been finalised. The remaining 49 names will be shortlisted by Saturday. The high command will take the final call and announce the names early in order to give the candidates ample time to campaign," sources said.
Reportedly there were heated arguments between two senior leaders during the selection process.
