BJP Criticizes Karnataka CM for Lifting Hijab Ban, Alleges Unrest Attempt

Bengaluru: A day after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the withdrawal of the ban on hijab citing that wearing dress and con summing food is a matter of individual choice, Bharatiya Janata Party leaders on Saturday criticized the move of the Congress ruled State Government.

At a function in Nanjangud taluk in Mysuru district, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday had announced the withdrawal of the ban on hijab imposed by the previous BJP government in February, 2022.

BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal asked Hindu students to wear ‘saffron” shawls in educational institutions if the State Government permitted wearing hijab against the order of the High Court of Karnataka and he observed that Congress Government wants to create unrest in the society to appease minorities by declaring that they will withdraw the order on banning hijab.

State BJP Chief and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra stated that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s decision to withdraw the hijab ban in educational institutions raises concerns about the secular nature of our educational spaces. Adding, he accused the State Government of dividing young minds along religious lines, potentially hindering the inclusive learning environment.

Former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai under whom the State Government banned wearing hijab in schools and colleges on Saturday reacted saying that the issue has been raised only for political gains which would be condemned in strongest words.

Bommai termed that hijab issue has been raked up by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to cover up his government’s failure and stated that Siddaramaiah has spoken of hijab withdrawal when the case is still pending in the Supreme Court.
