HYDERABAD: Hours after senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha, BRS national president and Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao joined the national Opposition in condemning the BJP-led government at the Centre, saying it will be remembered as a "Black Day" in Indian democracy and remain a testimony to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's “arrogance and autocratic rule.”
Rao termed Rahul Gandhi's disqualification as “extremely reproachable” on the part of the Modi government, which was not only abusing constitutional institutions but also abusing the highest democratic platform — Parliament — for its “nefarious activities.”
"Today is Black Day in the history of Indian democracy. Rahul Gandhi's disqualification from Parliament is the height of Narendra Modi's arrogance and dictatorship," Rao noted in a press statement. Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on Friday after a Surat court on Thursday convicted him in a criminal defamation case over his "why do all thieves have Modi surname" remark.
"It is an adverse time for democracy and the Constitutional values. The Modi regime has overshadowed the Emergency. Harassment of the Opposition leaders has become routine. Modi on his own is collapsing by disqualifying Opposition leaders to protect criminals and cheaters. This is not the time for conflicts between parties,” Rao continued.
He exhorted all democracy-loving people to openly denounce the BJP government's transgressions in order to protect the country's democracy and constitutional values, and to oppose the BJP's “evil policies”.
