Puducherry: Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Wednesday took oath as a legislator in the House. Speaker V. Vaithilingam administered the oath to the Chief Minister at a function held on legislative Assembly premises.

Narayanasamy, a non-member of the House when sworn in as the Chief Minister of the state, won the Nellithope Assembly by-poll, held on November 19 by defeating his immediate AIADMK rival Om Sakthi Segar by a margin of 11,144 votes.

Cabinet colleagues of Narayanasamy, Congress legislators and functionaries attended the function. Congress party will now have 15 members in the 30-member Assembly and its ally DMK has two legislators. Since, it has been mandatory for him to become a member of the territorial assembly within six months to continue in office as the Chief Minister, Nellithope Congress member John Kumar had resigned his post on September 15 to facilitate Narayanasamy to contest.

The 69-year-old Narayanasamy had served as minister of state in the Prime Minister’s Office in the second UPA government. DMK president M. Karunanidhi and Lt Governor Kiran Bedi were among others who congratulated the Chief Minister for a landslide victory in the by-election.

“Meeting the Winner. Looking forward to working together for a prosperous Puducherry” tweeted Ms Bedi just before her meeting with Narayanasamy.
