Bengaluru: Geetha Shivarajkumar, daughter-in-law of Kannada thespian actor Dr Rajkumar joined the Congress party in Bengaluru on Friday and she was welcomed to the party by president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) D.K. Shivakumar. Her husband Shivarajkumar would be campaigning for the Congress nominees in the ensuing Assembly polls.
Geetha is the daughter of late Chief Minister S. Bangarappa. Bangarappa served as the Chief Minister from the Congress party. Geetha was the first member of Dr Rajkumar’s family to make an electoral debut when she contested Shivamogga Lok Sabha election in 2014 as a Janata Dal Secular (JDS) nominee. She was defeated in the election.
After joining the Congress party, Geetha told reporters that she had a liking for the Congress party and now joined the party. She said she would start campaigning for the Congress nominees from Saturday and she would be joined by her husband in campaigning in seats where party leaders ask them to canvas.
Her brothers- Madhu Bangarappa and Kumar Bangarappa are in politics. Madhu was in JDS and represented the Assembly once while her other brother Kumar is a former minister.
In the 2023 election, Madhu is the Congress nominee while Kumar is the BJP nominee for Soraba seat in Shivamogga district. Soraba Assembly seat was earlier represented by Geetha’s father S. Bangarappa. Geetha said to campaign for Madhu in Soraba seat on Saturday.
Reacting to wife joining the Congress party, Shivarajkumar said he appreciated her decision.
