Kerala Assembly Elections: Candidates at boiling point
KOZHIKODE: The sun is showing no mercy to the candidates and they are cutting short public meetings between 12 noon and 3 p.m. and avoiding ‘walkathon’ on roads to avoid the scorching heat. Mr K. Praveen Kumar, UDF candidate in Nadapuram, uses sunscreen lotion to escape the sun. “A minimum of four pairs of dress is needed a day as sweating is severe. I keep three bottles of hot water in my vehicle which contains ayurvedic ingredients,” he says.
LDF candidate in Vadakara, C.K. Nanu has received valuable tips from his son Sushanth, a BAMS doctor. A special drink with a mix of ‘Naruneendi’ syrup is keeping Mr Nanu cool on the campaign trail. Mr K. Sreekanth, NDA candidate in Uduma, says that drinking hot water intermittently is the only way out.
“Washing the face will keep off the dryness. Speaking under the ‘pandal’ made of palm leaves will have a cooling effect,” adds Mr Sreekanth. Ms K.K. Shylaja, CPM candidate in Kuthuparamba, uses cardamom-mixed hot water to brave the summer. “Public meetings are arranged in the evening.
From morning till noon, I prefer to do person-to-person visit to avoid directly coming under the sun,” she says. Both the UDF and NDA candidates in Vadakara, Manayath Chandran and Mr M. Rajesh Kumar, had suffered sore throat and cough. Both of them drank cold water and bore the brunt.
Mr M.K. Muneer, UDF candidate in Kozhikode South, takes a break during his campaign. After completing the first leg in the morning, he comes back home around 11 a.m. and starts the next campaign in the afternoon. “A minimum of three pairs of dress is needed a day. Burn-marks have started appearing on his body,” says Nafeesa Vinitha, Mr Muneer’s wife.
