Centre to decide on Puducherry nominated members

As Puducherry is a Union Territory, the Centre has got right to take a decision on nominating members to the house.

Puducherry: With ruling Congress party making its stance clear on the issue of three BJP loyalists who were nominated as the members of the House once again by refusing to extend any facilities to them, the decision is with the Union government now.

While responding to a letter written by the nominated members , Speaker V. Vaithilingam said that any privilege can’t be allocated to members as “they are not recognised as members of the Legislative Assembly as per the records in the Assembly Secretariat.”

The Speaker on July 10 had returned the files pertaining to their nomination sent to him by the Lt Governor and denied them any facility in the house, saying that he does not have any intimation on the nomination of the three members.

As the Lt Governor Kiran Bedi, who earlier made her stance clear that she was acting according to the Union Territories Act, is not making any comment on the issue the BJP unit is expecting the Centre’s intervention now.

BJP unit president and one of the nominated MLAs, V. Samithanan said that the Congress party is playing a dirty political game on the issue of nominated MLAs.

“As Puducherry is a Union Territory, the Centre has got right to take a decision on nominating members to the house”, said Mr Saminathan. “The territorial government would face severe consequences for violating the rules”, he told Deccan Chronicle.
