CMs of Karnataka, TN Must Meet to Resolve Cauvery Dispute: BJP

BENGALURU: Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha member Lahar Singh Siroya on Thursday asked Chief Ministers of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to hold a meeting at the earliest to finding a solution to the sharing River Cauvery water and felt that by a meeting more can be achieved rather than seeking the help of Central Government or the Courts.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin among others, Lara Singh stated that “the best solution for this distress situation is for both States to understand each other’s needs and crisis and share whatever limited water is available equitably.”

The BJP MP wanted both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to view the sharing of River Cauvery water during crisis situations as a humanitarian crisis which needs to be addressed maturely by the two State Governments and there should be no scope for politics.

“We should at least break the old cycle of seeing the sharing of River Cauvery water as a regional conflict and a major dispute,” he said and also wanted Tamil Nadu to realize that Karnataka is not holding back water deliberately. The reservoirs in Cauvery basin are empty and there is drought in nearly 70 percent of the taluks in Karnataka. Singh observed “There is a drinking water crisis emerging in the State.”
