Left parties issue 2-day ultimatum to Congress on seat-sharing

Hyderabad: The proposed alliance with the Left parties appears to be in doldrums with the CPM issuing an October 31 deadline to the Congress on the allotment of two seats. The CPM is demanding Miryalaguda and Wyra; the Congress is not in favour of leaving the Wyra seat to the CPM.

The CPI plans to take a decision on the alliance based on the outcome of the Congress-CPM talks. The Congress has offered Kothagudem and Chennur to the CPI, which its leadership has accepted.

While it is okay with Miryalaguda, the CPM had asked for one of the four for it second seat — Khammam, Palair, Bhadrachalam and Wyra. There is a heavy rush in the Congress for these four seats, and the party rejected the demand.

The Congress on Friday allotted Khammam to Tummala Nageswara Rao, Palair to Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and is fielding party MLA Podem Veeraiah from Bhadrachalam. Instead of Wyra, the Congress is offering a seat in the GHMC limits but the CPM is unwilling.

It is against this backdrop that the CPM state secretary Tammineni Veerabhadram’s deadline on was issued. If it did not get Wyra, the CPM said, it would call off alliance.

"We want to have an alliance with the Congress. But they are offering seats which we don't want. Some Congress leaders are planning to contest as rebels from the seats being offered to the CPM. We will wait till October 31 for a response from the Congress. If there is no progress after October 31, we will have to call off the alliance and declare candidates on our own. We are left with no other option," Veerabhadram said.
