Poonjar squares up for fight
KOTTAYAM: Poonjar is set to witness a fierce four-cornered fight after the Left Democratic Front (LDF) decided to dump P.C. George. Though Mr George, the sitting legislator, has a strong support base it remains to be seen if he could withstand the onslaught of the domineering UDF and LDF, and the NDA, led by the BJP, which has been steadily improving its position.
Besides, his traditional Muslim voters could tilt towards SDPI, especially in Erattupetta municipality. He hopes the LDF supporters in the constituency to back him though he feels ‘betrayed’ by a section of the CPI (M) state leadership. He said he would never retaliate against the party for the “wrongs committed by its leadership” and he would not withdraw support to the LDF in Erattupetta municipality and Poonjar panchayat.
The two are also sharing power in Poonjar Thekkekara panchayat. However, the CPI (M) leadership, especially Pinarayi Vijayan, Kerala Congress (M) chair K.M. Mani, and the Diocese of Kanjirapally will go to any extend to ensure his defeat.
The KC (D) had reportedly chosen P.C. Joseph, whereas the KC (M) is yet to finalise its candidate. The Congress party also had expressed its wish to exchange the seat with KC (M). The NDA candidate, to be fielded by BDJS, will also be crucial.
