Tamil Nadu CM discusses delta facts to supplement contempt plea
Chennai: Besides legal affidavits, the Tamil Nadu government will brief the Supreme Court on other injustices meted out by the neighboring Karnataka reluctant in sharing Cauvery water as per the apex court order. The high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday discussed the parameters affecting Tamil Nadu as a riparian state in the last two months. PWD secretary S. K. Prabhakar made a presentation to the top brass informing what happened in the last eight weeks, as Karnataka was not releasing water as per the Supreme Court order.
The PWD officials are working overtime - garnering data like water realised at zero point, water due from Karnataka as on date, loss of crops in delta region and hectares of agricultural land abandoned in delta tail-end areas. A presentation will also be submitted at the court.
Further with the water level at Mettur standing now at 37 feet, the possibility of releasing water for Samba is a question for the third consecutive year. Details pertinent to the summer crops are also to be incorporated along with the contempt petition, informed sources said.
Meanwhile, law minister C. V. Shamugham who arrived at the Chennai airport told the media that Tamil Nadu will not give up its rights over the river Cauvery. “We are waiting for the Centre’s response and we will take subsequent action to restore our riparian rights”, the minister said.
