Congres may promise students free Net, sops for auto driver

Committee will tour districts from Oct. 2 to interact with people for comments

HYDERABAD: The Congress was considering promising free internet to students and a special scheme for the welfare of autorickshaw drivers, according to proposals that came up at a meeting of the party's manifesto committee here on Friday.

The Congress poll manifesto will offer sops in addition to six guarantees, D. Sridhar Babu, head of the committee drafting the poll document, said on Friday.

The committee will tour districts from October 2 to interact with people to know what they were expecting in the Congress manifesto and take measures accordingly to include them in the manifesto.

After the Congress declared the 'six guarantees' on September 17, the BRS has launched an aggressive campaign against it, claiming that the people would lose all existing benefits as the Congress had only promised six guarantees.

The BRS campaign claims that the Congress, if it wins, will not be able to implement these guarantees, alleging that the party had failed to do so in Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka.

To counter BRS charges, the Congress manifesto committee is incorporating all the existing welfare schemes of the BRS government with enhanced benefits besides announcing a few more welfare schemes that are not being implemented by the ruling party.
