BSP fields a transperson, first in Telangana
Hyderabad: Chithrapu Pushpita Laya who has been fielded as Bahujan Samaj Party’s candidate from Warangal East constituency becomes the first trans person to contest any election in Telangana state. The 29-year-old is also the first trans person to contest elections in both Telugu states. Her candidature was announced in the party’s second list announced on Monday. She completed Intermediate and is engaged in social work now.
Laya told Deccan Chronicle that getting a ticket and the support from their party chief Mayawati and also the Telangana Chief RS Praveen Kumar is not just a recognition to her, but for the entire transgender community.
If she wins, she focuses on the upliftment of the transgender community, the stigma surrounding them, and bring awareness among them. “ We are very clear on the benefits for the community. We will also become a voice of the women, students, unemployed and the downtrodden,” Laya added.
She also added that she along with her colleagues will fight the ‘ Gadila palana’ and work for social justice in Telangana.
Laya who was born and brought up in Warangal said that she was with the people during the recent floods that inundated the city and supported them by providing food and other basic needs.
