Assam CM Meets Governor, Tenders Resignation, New Govt Likely On May 12
AGP proposes name of Himanta Biswa Sarma to lead NDA in state.

Guwahati : Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya to facilitate the formation of a new government in the state. The chief minister also submitted the resignation of his council of ministers to the Governor at the Lok Bhavan.
The Governor asked Mr Sarma to continue in office till the formation and swearing-in of the new government.
Following the formal notification of the results of Assam Elections 2026 and to enable the formation of the new government, Mr Sarma tendered his resignation as chief minister along with that of the council of ministers to the Governor Mr Laxman Prasad Acharya, the office of the chief minister said in a social media post.
Indicating that new government would be formed after May 11, Assam chief minister told reporters that the date for swearing in ceremony would be decided according to schedule of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “We want the presence of the Prime Minister on this occasion as NDA has got a historic mandate of 102 seats in the state,” he said.
The NDA has secured a third consecutive term in Assam, winning 102 out of 126 assembly seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged with 82 seats, while its allies — Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People's Front — won 10 seats each.
He also noted that a meeting of newly elected BJP MLAs will be held based on directions from J. P. Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini, who have been appointed as central observer and co-observer, respectively, to oversee the election of the legislative party leader.
Mr Sarma said that he will coordinate with Mr Nadda to finalise the date for the meeting, marking the beginning of the government formation process.
Meanwhile, regional Asom Gana Parishad, which convened a meeting of newly elected legislators, in a resolution proposed the name of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the leadership of the NDA in Assam.
The AGP legislature party also elected Mr Atul Borah as its leader and Mr Keshaw Mahanta as its deputy leader.
