Trinamul Congress Announces Candidates for July 10 Bypoll

TMC announced four candidates, including defectors Krishna Kalyani and Mukut Mani Adhikari, for West Bengal assembly bypoll on July 10

Kolkata: Trinamul Congress on Friday announced the names of four candidates in a mixed bag of old and new faces for the assembly bypoll in West Bengal to be held on July 10.

Among them, two– Krishna Kalyani (Raiganj) and Mukut Mani Adhikari (Ranaghat South)-- got tickets again at their seats from where they recently resigned to contest the Lok Sabha Election but lost to BJP at Raiganj and Ranaghat parliamentary constituencies respectively.

Both had defected to chief minister Mamata Banerjee's party after winning as BJP MLAs in 2021.

The TMC supremo however did not give a second chance to another BJP turncoat Biswajit Das, who had also resigned as an MLA to contest the parliamentary election at Bongaon and lost, to fight at his assembly seat: Bagda.

This time, Ms Banerjee fielded Madhuparna Thakur, who is the daughter of party Rajya Sabha MP Mamata Bala Thakur belonging to the Matuas, at Bagda to woo the voters of the Hindu migrants community.

At the Maniktala seat in North Kolkata, the TMC chief gave the ticket to her college friend Supti Pande, who is also the wife of late state consumer affairs minister Sadhan Pande.

The BJP, which suffered badly in the hands of the TMC in the parliamentary election and faces a huge internal discontent, is yet to select it's candidates for the bypoll.

On the other hand, the Left Front has decided to fight at three seats, leaving one, Raiganj, for the Congress after talks. While CPI(M) has fielded it's candidates, Rajiv Majumdar at Maniktala and Arindam Biswas at Ranaghat South, Forward Bloc candidate Gouraditya Biswas will contest at Bagda.
