NEW DELHI, KOLKATA: The Election Commission of India on Friday ordered repolling in 15 polling stations across two Assembly constituencies in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal following reports of electoral malpractices.
Repolling will be held on May 2 between 7 am and 6 pm at 11 polling stations in Magrahat Paschim and four in Diamond Harbour constituencies. The polling in these seats was conducted during the second phase of the Assembly elections on April 29.
The Commission said the decision was based on reports from returning officers and observers, taking into account “material circumstances”.
The BJP had alleged large-scale malpractices in polling stations under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Abhishek Banerjee. The EC had deputed a special observer to verify the claims. Separately, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited a strongroom in Bhabanipur and raised concerns over possible irregularities. Following tensions at two counting centres in Kolkata, police imposed prohibitory orders around all seven strongrooms in the city.
