SCR Vijayawada Division Installs WCMS Crossing
Vijayawada: Vijayawada division of South Central Railway has crossed a major milestone by successfully laying the first weldable cast manganese steel (WCMS) crossing in the down line of the Vetapalem yard in the busy Vijayawada-Gudur section.
Announcing the commissioning of the innovative WCMS technology, Vijayawada divisional railway manager (DRM) Narendra A. Patil underlined that WCMS crossings are part of modernising the Indian Railways’ tracks for coping with the increased speed and heavy axle load.
The DRM explained that WCMS crossings are crucial components used in railway tracks at the junctions where two rails cross. WCMS crossings are designed to handle increased speeds and heavy axle loads, ensuring smooth transition of train wheels from one track to another.
Narendra Patil pointed out that currently, tracks are laid with long-welded rails, that is a single rail over a length of a block section (station to station). As no joint-free technology had been available till now, yards had to be separated with fish-plated joints behind turn-outs.
The DRM said using the advanced WCMS crossing technology, all long-welded rails can be converted into continuous welded rails, including the yards and turnouts. This ushers in joint-free tracks over the maximum length of division, increasing the safety standards.
Narendra Patil said WCMS crossings enhance safety and speed while improving riding experience. There are no jerks, especially at points of the yard in the 130 kmph speed sections. He maintained that Vijayawada division will continue to strive for excellence, harnessing cutting-edge technology to enhance the overall experience of rail passengers.
