8 killed in tempo-truck collision on Mumbai-Nashik highway

Mumbai:At least eight people were killed and several others injured in a collision between a tempo and a truck in Nashik on the Mumbai-Agra Highway flyover. Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced financial assistance of Rs five lakh to the families of the deceased.
The accident took place when a tempo collided with a truck carrying iron rods on Sunday night. The victims, all residents of Nashik, were on their way back after visiting a religious event in Niphad. Police sources have indicated that the death toll may rise, as some of the injured are in critical condition.
“There were 16 passengers in the tempo, who were returning from a religious event in Niphad. The tempo driver lost control over the vehicle and rear-ended the truck carrying iron rods. Some of the deaths took place on the spot. Some of the injured are critical,” the police official said.
Eyewitnesses said that the speeding tempo hit the back of the truck. The impact was so severe that the tempo was shattered and iron rods pierced the vehicle’s cabin. The iron rods entered the bodies of the children sitting at the back and many of them died on the spot. The injured have been admitted to both government and private hospitals.
Mr. Fadnavis has expressed condolences regarding the victims of the accident on the Nashik-Mumbai highway and paid heartfelt tributes. The families of the deceased will be provided financial assistance of Rs five lakh, and the government will cover the medical expenses of the injured, he added.
