Srinagar Declared a World Crafts City

Srinagar: The World Crafts Council AISBL (WCC-International), an international non-profit organization dedicated to fostering the preservation, promotion, and advancement of global craftsmanship and traditional crafts, has recognised Srinagar as a world crafts city.

The recognition of the Kashmiri capital as a place having a rich history of craftsmanship and cultural heritage celebrates the exceptional skills and dedication of its artisans and craftsmen, whose work has gained international acclaim.

J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his happiness over Srinagar being declared a world crafts city. He wrote on microbloggig site 'X', "Heartiest congratulations to Srinagar for being recognised as a World Craft City by the World Crafts Council. This prestigious honour celebrates the rich heritage, craftsmanship, and vibrant culture of our beloved Srinagar."

He added, "Kudos to all the artisans and craftsmen whose dedication and talent have made this achievement possible."

People associated with exquisite Kashmir handicrafts trade and other stakeholders have hoped that the recognition by an international organisation such as the WCC will not only give a new boost to the cottage industry and tourism of the Valley but also encourage its younger generation to try their luck with one of the major traditional sources of earning.

The WCC AISBL is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Since its inception in June 1964 , it has been affiliated with UNESCO under Consultative Status.
