Star TMC MLA beats restaurant owner, staff

Kolkata: Actor-turned Trinamul Congress MLA Soham Chakraborty has landed in a major controversy after he was caught beating a restaurant owner and his staff during an altercation in New Town on Friday.

Mr Chakraborty, who is a legislator of Chandipur in East Midnapore, was busy shooting a Bengali film with an actress at the rooftop of a building that houses the restaurant, in the evening.

An altercation broke out between the security personnel of the TMC MLA and the restaurant owner Anisul Alam over making space for parking cars of customers in the adjacent area that was already occupied by Mr Chakraborty’s convoy.

A jostle unfolded between the two sides immediately. Amid shooting, Mr Chakraborty got down through the stairs and thrashed Mr Alam and his staff Debasis, who works as a manager.

As the CCTV footage of the assault went viral on Saturday, the TMC MLA admitted to his role before making a bogus claim apparently.

He alleged, “When I reached the ground floor, the restaurant owner abused me and also used indecent words in the name of our party leader Abhishek Banerjee. I lost my cool then and slapped him.” Mr Alam, who called himself a TMC supporter also, punctured the actor's allegations.

He said, “Soham attacked me first. I didn't abuse either him or Abhishek, who I respect. Soham is lying to save himself. If a celebrity-cum-public representative resorts to hooliganism instead of undertaking development, it shows his lack of education.”

Later Mr Alam and Mr Chakraborty lodged complaints with the police against each other. BJP criticised the TMC over the incident.
