Tamil Nadu Governor Ravi’s Delhi Visit Sparks Speculation on Job Extension

Chennai: Governor R N Ravi, who left Chennai on a five-day visit to New Delhi on Monday, called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday, triggering speculations that he was lobbying for an extension of his gubernatorial job, which, some claim, comes to an end soon as he had served as Governor of Nagaland for over two years before coming over to Tamil Nadu.

While it is not clear if the five-year term of Ravi’s gubernatorial posting will be calculated from the day he took charge in Nagaland on July 20, 2019, or from the day he was sworn in at Chennai on September 18, 2001, rumours are making their rounds over his lobbying for extension as the grapevine has it that it would be counted from the day he was first made Governor of Nagaland.

Giving credence to the speculation is Ravi using his five-day personal visit to Delhi to call on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Union Ministers. Describing his meeting with Amit Shah as ‘productive,’ Ravi said in a message on X that he discussed the ‘prevailing security and related situations in Tamil Nadu and their implications for the peace, progress and safety of the people of the state.’

Amit Shah had an ‘amazing insight into the issues affecting our people and immense concern for their well-being,’ said Ravi, who earlier in the day met Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and discussed ways and means to take higher education in Tamil Nadu to a higher level.

Through his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, he said, he had ‘the benefit of his concern, vision and guidance in the service of the people of Tamil Nadu.’ He also called on Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minorities Affairs, Kiren Rijiju.

Ravi, who had a series of run-ins with the elected Government of Tamil Nadu, which includes his storming out of the State Assembly before the playing of the national anthem, was also seen as a controversial Governor of Nagaland, where journalists of the Kohima Press Club boycotted the State organized farewell for him.
