Here are some Important Acts Passed During the 17th Lok Sabha
Hyderabad: The Ministry of Parliamentary affairs on June 12 said that the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha will be held from June 24 to July 3. "This session will witness oath/affirmation of the newly elected members of the Lok Sabha, election of Speaker, address of Hon’ble President of India and the discussion thereon," said Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Kiran Rijiju.
As the country gears up to hold the first session of 18th Lok Sabha, let's take a look at some prominent legislation's made during the 17th Lok Sabha.
Important bills passed and amended during the 17th Lok Sabha session (2019-2024):
1. Abrogation of Article 370:
- Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019: This act bifurcated the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories—Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, and revoked its special status under Article 370 of the Constitution.
2.Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019:
- This controversial act amended the Citizenship Act of 1955 to provide a pathway to Indian citizenship for non-Muslim minorities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014.
3.Triple Talaq Bill (Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019):
- This law criminalized the practice of instant triple talaq among Muslims and provided for up to three years imprisonment for the husband.
4.Farm Laws, 2020:
- Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act.
- Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act.
5. Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act.
These laws aimed to reform agricultural markets but were met with widespread protests, leading to their repeal in 2021.
6.The Code on Wages, 2019:
- This consolidated four previous labor laws relating to wages and aimed to simplify and rationalize the complex labor laws in India.
7.The Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020:
- This code aims to regulate the health and safety conditions of workers in establishments across various sectors.
8.The Industrial Relations Code, 2020:
- This code amalgamated and simplified three central labor laws related to industrial relations, facilitating easier regulations and compliance for businesses.
9.The Code on Social Security, 2020:
- This aims to extend social security to all employees and workers in both the organized and unorganized sectors, including gig and platform workers.
10.The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) Act, 2020:
- This act aimed at improving the quality and accountability of medical education in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda, Yoga, and Naturopathy.
11.Women's Reservation Bill (Constitution 106th Amendment Act, 2023):
- This act reserves one-third of all seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies, including those reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
