Mob Throws Stones, Eggs At TMC Leader Abhishek In Bengal

TMC MP accuses BJP supporters of targeting him during a visit to families affected by post-poll violence and questions the absence of police at the scene.

Kolkata: Trinamul Congress (TMC) general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was attacked by a mob in Sonarpur town of West Bengal on Saturday while visiting victims of post-poll violence.

According to reports, a group of people hurled stones, eggs and shoes at Banerjee and raised slogans against him. He was escorted out by aides and security personnel, wearing a protective helmet amid the scuffle.
The incident occurred in the Kamrabad area under Rajpur-Sonarpur municipality when Banerjee tried to enter the locality on a motorcycle. He was forced to disembark as locals gathered, shouting slogans and blocking his movement. Despite resistance, he proceeded on foot for about a kilometre before being escorted away.
Visuals showed Banerjee with torn clothes during the confrontation. Police and Central forces later reached the spot and evacuated him as protests continued, with women seen holding broomsticks and bamboo sticks and raising slogans.
“They wanted to kill me. The whole incident has been captured on camera. We will definitely let the High Court know about this. We will also let the governor know about this. I will definitely move court,” Banerjee said.
“It's all BJP-sponsored. Look what they have done. This is their example of democracy. It hasn't even been a month, and the police are nowhere to be seen. My head was somehow spared; fortunately, I was wearing a helmet. They have torn my clothes and broken my spectacles,” he alleged.
Local residents questioned his visit and raised slogans, with some accusing the ruling party of neglect and alleging governance issues in the area.
Banerjee said he would remain in the area until police presence was ensured. “I will not abandon Sanju's elderly parents in this condition until additional forces arrive. I will once again ask our workers to contact the police,” he said.
TMC chief Mamata Banerjee blamed the BJP for the incident. “RULERS BECAME KILLERS- shame on you BJP!” she said on X.
However, BJP West Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya denied involvement, saying the incident could be a reaction to local grievances. “The BJP is not involved in such activities. What has happened is not expected in a democracy,” he said.
Police presence was initially absent, according to claims, but a large contingent later reached the area and brought the situation under control.
