UP: Man Claims Sex Change Surgery Without Consent, Hospital Denies

Hyderabad: A man claimed that sex reassignment surgery (SRS) was performed on him without his consent at Begrajpur Medical College, Mansoorpur, Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. However, the hospital clarified that the man underwent the sex reassignment process of his own will.

A 20-year-old Mujahid said that a person, namely Omprakash, used to molest and harass him for the past two years. He alleged that he was deceived by Omprakash on June 3 and convinced the doctors at the medical college to perform surgery on him that involved the removal of genders and forced gender change.

Mujahid said that he was falsely informed that he had a medical issue requiring a checkup at the hospital. Accompanied by Omprakash, he visited the facility where the hospital staff allegedly administered anesthesia and performed the surgery.

"When I woke up, Omprakash told me that I am a woman now and that he would take me to Lucknow to marry me. He threatened to kill my father if I resisted," Mujahid was quoted saying by India Today. He added that doctors colluded with Omprakash to perform the surgery without his consent.

Based on a complaint filed by Mujahis’s father, police arrested Omprakash.

Bhartiya Kisan Union protesters organized a demonstration outside the hospital, alleging that the police inquiry was carried out carelessly.

As per Shyam Pal, a farmer leader, the doctors at the hospital were involved in the illegal organ trade. "I believe there is a very big racket going on here where they remove vital organs of the body and sell them at a higher price," he said.

Additionally, he demanded the government to direct the hospital to pay the victim's family compensation of Rs 2 crore.

"There was a case here in which a person was operated for sex change. His family members alleged that he was misled by another person and the operation was done. A sit-in protest was held here to get a fair investigation done in this matter and whatever allegations have been made by them have been taken into consideration. Further investigation is underway," Ramashish Singh, Circle Officer of Khatauli Police Station in Muzaffarnagar, said.

The hospital administration, however, refuted the man's allegation that he was operated on deceptively.

As per, Chief Medical Superintendent Kirti Goswami, for two months, the man had been visiting the hospital on a regular basis to see Dr. Raza Farooqi, a plastic surgeon.

According to Goswami, the male wanted to have sex reassignment surgery and was identified as a woman.

According to the Chief Superintendent, Dr. Farooqi sent the man to two psychiatrists for an evaluation of his medical state, which is required as per law before a sex change procedure. After two months, the man had surgery since the psychiatrists said he was psychologically fit.

"The man came here to get admitted on June 4 and his operation was conducted on June 6. All these procedures are legal and were conducted under the supervision of Dr Farooqui," Goswami added.

Goswami further said that the authorities had a video of the man prior to his operation, in which he was seen talking about undergoing an operation to change his gender.
