Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s legendary cine star Uttam Mohanty passed away late on Thursday evening at Medanta Hospital in New Delhi, sending the entire state into a state of deep shock and sorrow. He was 66.
The news of his demise was confirmed by his son, Babushaan Mohanty, who shared that the veteran actor suffered a cardiac arrest at around 10.41 am. Uttam Mohanty had been unwell for some time, and his passing marks the end of an era for Odia cinema.
Often hailed as the first superstar of Odisha, Uttam Mohanty’s career spanned over four decades, during which he appeared in more than 130 Odia films, several Bengali movies, and even made his mark in a Hindi film. His charismatic screen presence and versatile acting won him widespread acclaim and love from audiences across regions.
Uttam started his career in Sadhu Meher’s ‘Abhiman’ in 1997 and went to act in many masterpieces like ‘Danda Balunga’ and ‘Kie Jite Kie Haare.’
Uttam Mohanty was the youngest recipient of the Jayadev Samman, the highest cine award given by the Odisha government to honor veteran artists. His contribution to the cultural and cinematic landscape of Odisha remains unparalleled.
Condolences have been pouring in from political leaders, fans, and members of the film fraternity. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his grief, stating, “The death of Uttam Mohanty has created a void in Ollywood that can never be filled. I extend my sincere condolences to the bereaved family members of the actor.”
BJP National Vice President Baijyant Panda, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and several other dignitaries also paid tribute to the late actor. The Chief Minister announced that Uttam Mohanty’s last rites will be conducted with full state honours, reflecting the immense respect and admiration he commanded.
A legendary journey
Born on December 23, 1958, Uttam Mohanty grew up in Odisha and discovered his passion for acting at an early age. He made his film debut in 1977 with Sadhu Meher’s movie 'Abhiman' and there was no looking back. He quickly rose to stardom, delivering memorable performances in iconic films like 'Jajabara', 'Chilika Teerey', and 'Danda Balunga'.
Beyond his remarkable career, Uttam Mohanty was also known for his graceful demeanor and humble nature. In 1987, he married his co-star Aparajita Priyadarshini, with whom he shared an inspiring partnership both on and off the screen.
Final Journey to Odisha
According to family sources, Uttam Mohanty’s mortal remains will be brought to Odisha on Friday for the final rites. Fans and well-wishers are expected to gather in large numbers to bid a tearful farewell to their beloved superstar.
As the curtains close on this luminous life, Uttam Mohanty leaves behind a legacy of extraordinary talent, dedication, and love for cinema. He will forever remain in the hearts of his fans as an irreplaceable icon of Odia cinema.
