168 diarrhoea cases listed in 23 villages of AP
Vijayawada: Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav has said the state government is taking various steps to check the spread of diarrhoea.
“Some 168 diarrhoea cases were registered in 23 villages so far. Of these, 58 cases were listed in Jaggayyapet but the situation is under control,” he said after a visit of the Social Health Centre in Jaggayyapet, where several victims were under treatment.
Jaggayyapet MLA Sriram Rajagopal, former minister Nettem Raghuram, health special principal secretary Krishna Babu, commissioner Dr Venkateshwar, joint collector Sampath Kumar and other officials were present.
The minister inspected the drinking water supply systems and enquired about the water supply position with the locals.
He said, “It is the responsibility of the government to protect the people. We are providing better treatment to the victims. Deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan reviewed the situation. We are taking action at field level both on urgent basis and on long-term perspective.”
“Since the onset of monsoon, 168 cases of diarrhoea were reported from 23 villages. Along with Kakinada and Guntur, such cases have been registered in Jaggayyapet in NTR district. So far, 58 cases were reported from Jaggayyapet. Of these, 14 people were discharged and the rest were undergoing treatment in hospitals,” he said.
Promising the people that full treatment is being provided to the victims of diarrhoea, Satya Kumar said contamination of piped water appeared to be the main reason for the spread. Non-cleaning of distributary canals, mix of drainage water with drinking water via pipeline leaks, diversion of the 15th finance commission funds, etc were also the likely reasons, he said.
He said, “We are spreading awareness about diarrhoea with ANM and Asha workers, explaining the precautions that people should take in terms of personal and environmental cleanliness. Hence, people should drink only boiled and filtered water.”
The minister said the government was conducting biological tests at water sources every Wednesday after testing samples at more than 30,000 water sources, in which 217 water sources were found slightly contaminated.
