AI to Reshape Job Market, Says Google X Founder

Sebastian Thrun predicts AI will reshape jobs, urging youth to upskill while calling for balanced regulations at Invest Karnataka

Bengaluru: While asking young people to prepare themselves for new roles owing to Artificial Intelligence (AI) impact on job market, Sebastian Thrun, founder of Google X on Thursday stated “Approximately 60 percent of current jobs may disappear but far more jobs will emerge as a result of AI and other technologies” and assured “AI will work alongside human workers to create newer opportunities rather than eliminating them.”

At the Invest Karnataka-2025, a global investors meet organised by Government of Karnataka at Bangalore Palace Grounds in Bengaluru city, Sebastian Thrun, on AI and its impact on regulation and job markets, said AI’s rise will lead to a shift in job types and those who adapt will find new career prospects in the fields that are currently emerging in the job market.

He wanted the younger generation to embrace the opportunities AI will bring in the fields of coding, data science, cyber security and digital marketing and anticipated that AI would bring in drastic changes in industries such as transportation, healthcare and personalized services.

Thrun laid emphasis on the huge potential of AI and opined “I will continue to transform daily life and open up new possibilities.”

“In future, AI might even talk to our children and grandchildren after we’ve passed away,” predicted Thrun and stated “Through digital twins, we'll be able to attend meetings and work from remote locations.”

Thrun threw light on regulations on AI in countries such as China and the European Union and stated “Regulation is necessary but it must not hinder research.” Continuing, he said, “It’s not right to control technology before it has even had the chance to develop” and added “Proper regulation should only step in when there’s misuse.”

On Indian Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), Thrun heaped praise on CEOs stating “Indian CEOs are incredibly tech-savvy and visionary, which is why they have been able to lead global companies like Google.”
